What's a MIDI file? A MIDI file is not a recording of a song, it's a list of the notes and instruments that make up a song. It acts as sheet music: it tells the computer what note to play (synthesize) at a certain point in time. Since it doesn't contain the actual recording, file sizes are much smaller than other audio files.
