Committee - Technical Director

In FASS, the Technical Director has responsibility for making sure that all technical elements of the production are designed and created to meet the Director's overall vision and that all technical running positions are filled. This does not mean that he or she must design or build everything - he or she simply must make sure that it is done. The major areas that a TD must ensure are covered are : Costumes, Makeup, Sound, Lights, Set and Props. He or she does not need to be an expert in these areas, but rather will be finding people to fill these creative and/or technical roles. As well, the TD finds the running crew : sound and light board operators, video operators, key grip, grips, prop mistress/prop master, follow spot operators, etc, that will perform the technical operations of the show during the performances under the direction of the Stage Manager.

Generally, the Tech Director's real work will start at auditions, encouraging people to sign up to be a techie. It will continue at the technical organization meeting, generally held the weekend following readthrough, and will build from there, keeping everyone organized and ensuring that all technical elements of the production are ready to meet the Director's vision of the piece. He or she and his or her staff works closely with the Director to ensure that the mood, tone and period of the created designs mesh with the Director's wishes and with the Stage Manager to co-ordinate schedules and operations on the stage and otherwise.
