KWLT & FASS Theatre Workshop Series

posted 2008/10/22 by Nadia V. Ursacki

KWLT & FASS presents the 3nd Annual 2008 Free Theatre Workshop Series, November 6, 13, 20, & 27 from 7pm to 10pm in MC 2017.

Admission is FREE so sign up early to ensure your spot. Email ad@kwlt.org or call (519) 886-0660.

November 6: Auditioning

with Cait Glasson

Auditioning can be a terrifying, exhilarating experience. In this workshop, you'll find ten tips on how to make it a more successful and pleasant experience, both for you and the director. You'll also find five tips on How Not to Get Cast, surefire ways to get The Dreaded Phone Call. Approximately two hours; if you can bring a prepared piece, or even a piece you want to have critiqued, bring it, as we will do one or two quick critiques near the end, with audience participation.

*Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing and be prepared to move around.

November 13: Producing & Publicity

with Anita Kilgour

Producing and publicity are two of the unsung heroes of a show. Do it well and the show makes money. Do it poorly and even the best rehearsed cast faces small audiences. Some simple scheduling and ideas can make the difference between the two. Anita Kilgour provides some insight & suggestions based on years of production experience with KWLT.

November 20: Stage Management

with Erin Moffat

An introduction to stage management aimed specifically at the community theatre stage manager. This interactive workshop will benefit both novice and experienced stage managers.

November 27: Improvisation

with Bernie Roehl

An introduction to improvisation for actors. The workshop will provide an introduction to the basic skills involved in improvisational theatre. Among the topics to be covered include spontaneity, cooperation, teamwork, use of space, non-verbal communication, creating characters, and making strong choices. This workshop will be fun, fast-paced and creative.

*Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing and be prepared to move around.

Fall Organizational Meeting

posted 2008/09/24 by Diana Chisholm

Come one, come all to the FASS Fall Organizational Meeting!

Why come out? There will be food, friends, and fun! If you're interested in getting involved in the 2009 show in any way (including writing, acting, tech, production, creative staff, or even just in the audience) then the people to talk to will be there to answer your questions. If you've been involved before, it's also a nice way to catch up with some previous FASSies (maybe that you haven't seen since February) and of course score some free food.

Hope to see you there!

FASS @ Orientation Week

posted 2008/08/08 by Diana Chisholm

I'm really excited to annouce FASS' involvement in Orientation Week 2008! We'll be hosting a Variety Night at Theatre of the Arts (in ML) for the Residence Orientation Committee.

What we need are acts! Lots of acts! Musical acts! Non-musical acts! Improv acts! Anything goes, within reason of course. :)

We're also (with the help of our lovely CSW and writing team) going to have a scripted piece (maybe 20 minutes or so) to perform, so we'll need people to be involved in that.

The time committment for this event is one night only: Tuesday, September 2nd. We'll get a chance to rehearse in the ML theatre in the evening, and then the Variety Night starts at 9:45.

Please send me an email if you're interested in any of the following:

This should be a lot of fun, I'm really excited about participating in Orientation Week (for the first time since 2004, which was awesome)!

FASS Summer Mailout!

You can find the lovely Summer Mailout here

The mailout contains tons of information on how to get involved, what's going on over the summer, and messages from various committee members. Highlights include:

Please check it out, and feel free to send it to anyone you know that's involved (or would like to be) in FASS. It's also kinda pretty. :)

Writers' Meetings for June: Mondays at Grad House (June 9, 16, 23, 30)

posted 2008/06/02 by Stephen Snuggles Skrzydlo

Thank you to everyone who has come out to our May meetings, we've been doing lots of good brainstorming and it's time to keep that storm going (the surge is working).

In June we're going to be meeting on Mondays (althought not today, the 2nd... starting on the 9th).

We're still in our beer-enabled location of the Grad House (in the boardroom, go upstairs, through the door and look for another door. Amusingly there is another door through that door, but that would take us outside onto the fire escape).

Things start up at 7PM and run till 9PM, if you show up after 8PM and you're not a Grad student you'll be charged a $5 cover.

We'll very likely have a second movie meeting this month, but I haven't settled on details yet so look for that in the relatively near future.

Remember, you can contribute at any time through the FASS wiki.

Deadline for Technical Director and Stage Manager Applications: May 30

posted 2008/05/23 by Diana Chisholm

Applications to join the exciting production of FASS 2009 as Technical Director or Stage Manager are now going to be accepted until next Friday, May 30 at 7:00 pm.

The CSW and his team of writers are cooking up some exciting tech challenges, and of course we couldn't have a spy-themed show without some EXPLOSIONS! Sound like a good time? Apply to be TD.

As for Stage Manager, who wouldn't want to work with our fabulous new Director, Latrell? If you've got a knack for organization and herding cats... I mean people, then apply to be SM.

Also, if you know someone inside or outside of the FASS family that would be interested and would do a good job, encourage them to apply.

Once again, the new deadline is Friday, May 30 by 7:00 pm. Just email me with which position you're interested in, what you bring to it, and your availability for May 30 - June 12 (evenings after 7 and weekends) for interviews.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Writers' Meeting - Sunday April 13th at 2PM

posted 2008/04/03 by Stephen Snuggles Skrzydlo

To avoid interfering with any exams I've decided to kick off the FASS 2009 writing season with a Lazy Sunday brainstorming meeting. Thus Sunday April 13th at 2PM will be our very first FASS 2009 Writers' meeting. The location will be my house (see FASSmod email or Facebook group for directions.)

I'm going to be setting regular weekly meetings in a more generic location, but I want to do it on an evening that is convenient for all you writers out there. So if you'd like to contribute to the writing process by regularly attending writers' meetings, please send me a note stating which weekday evenings don't work for you in general.

If you don't intend on somewhat regularly attending weekly writers' meetings, don't worry! You're still invited whenever we have them, and there will be occasional weekend writers' events for theme movies and other such fun. I'm also working on ways for people to contribute remotely. If you're interested in that particular endeavour let me know.

I will be announcing things in as many ways as possible, including (but not limited to):

So even if you can't make the 13th, keep your eyes peeled for further meetings. See you next Sunday!

Announcing FASS 2009 Theme and Committee

posted 2008/03/30 by Diana Chisholm

I'm Diana Chisholm (better known as Dee) and to my great honour and delight, I'm now the President of FASS!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the AGM today, and for those who couldn't make it, I have a handy dandy re-cap of what went on:

1. We now have an almost-full FASS 2009 Committee:

2. We now have a theme for the FASS 2009 show:

Spy!

You will receive more information from our lovely CSW about the first writer's meeting and how YOU can get involved in writing the show, even if you're away over the summer.

3. Nominations are officially open for the three vacant Committee positions:

If you are interested in applying for any of these positions, please email me with which position you're applying for and a brief outline of your qualifications. The application period will close in two weeks. Descriptions of the positions are available here or you can feel free to talk to any of the past holders of the positions to get their take on them.

That's it from me. I'm really excited to be president this year, and I encourage you to apply for a committee position and join us in another fun-filled year!
