Director and Treasurer Results!

I am very proud to announce the two newest members of the FASS 2017 committee! Bringing superpowers of organization, telling people what to do, and having the same name:
  • Emily Crawford – Director
  • Emily Pass – Treasurer

Thank you to everyone who applied! It was a very difficult decision! Applications for Producer and Technical Director are closed and they will be chosen in the next few weeks.

We’re still looking for our Director’s favourite (and most organized) sidekick: the stage manager! Applications for Stage Manager officially close on Thursday, June 2 at 6PM. If you’re interested in this role, send an email to outlining your skills, experience & interest in the role. Committee will interview candidates and provide a shortlist to the Director for her final choice. If you have questions about the role, talk to me, the soon-to-be-past SM!

Committee Meeting #1 Recap

Committee held its first meeting Wednesday May 4. Here’s what happened!

Nyssa Tilford has been appointed to Committee as an at-large member. We appointed Clara Walker, Nyssa Tilford, and Robert Audas to the Executive to bring it up to seven. Two of these people hold temporary seats until we appoint a Treasurer and Producer.

We also had a great discussion about the challenges we experienced at April’s General Meeting and what we could do to avoid those sorts of issues in the future. A special thanks to all the guests that attended!

Potential Solutions

The goal of the discussion was to come up with solutions that avoid the negativity that we experienced, while still allowing individuals to express what they feel is best for FASS. The group chatted about a variety of potential solutions, including adding a time limit to discussion, removing it altogether, gathering anonymous feedback, having a standard list of questions, etc.

The group landed on three items to look into further. The new process would combine these items and would probably replace the discussion with candidates out of the room.

  • Nomination period that starts after the show is complete.
    • Nominations would be released before the AGM as a public list.
    • People can approach candidates about particular issues or approach committee.
    • Committee could bring any concerns to the candidate.
    • Role briefing for candidates to give them more information and a list of questions to think about.
      • Questions to think about would include questions from the company.
    • Nominations would still be accepted from the floor at the meeting.
  • Break after nominations but before questions.
    • Chance for additional nominations after the break.
    • Chance for individuals to raise concerns with a committee member.
    • Chance for committee to raise concerns with the nominee anonymously.
  • More information about roles and what skills/experience you may want.
    • For all roles (elected and appointed).
    • Position slides at AGM should have more information about the role and its expectations.
    • Make these (or some other form of position information) available ahead of time for candidates.

Next Steps

Committee is going to discuss the options and flesh them out. We’ll send out a proposal for comments/feedback. We’ll likely hold a session where people can come in and express their thoughts. If constitutional changes are needed, we’d hold a special general meeting before the Readthrough in January.

In the meantime, if you have any feedback that you’d like to share, please email or chat with anyone on Committee.

Apply Now for the FASS 2017 Team!

FASS 2017 needs a lot of different superpowers to make it happen. From creative vision to super organization, the remaining roles on committee are great for getting involved in FASS 2017 in a big way.

This glamorous position entails being in charge of all of FASS’s money. The Treasurer prepares a budget for Committee’s approval, writes cheques for expenses, ensures that all the spending fits in the budget, and then prepares a financial report to be delivered at the AGM. The Treasurer is very, very important to FASS’s continued existence!

If there isn’t an audience, then the show is really just a rehearsal. That’s where the Producer comes in. Create posters, sell tickets, and promote the show to the world! The Producer is also in charge of securing cameos: maybe an astronaut is in our future?

The Director takes our script and brings it to life by adding actors, set pieces, costuming, lighting, sound, and music. They are responsible for casting, running rehearsals, and making a lot of decisions to bring their vision to life.

Tech Director

The Tech Director is responsible for coordinating lighting, sound, special effects, sets, props, and costumes for the production. This often means coordinating a team of volunteers to build amazing things out of cardboard!

Stage Manager

FASS’ Stage Manager schedule FASSies, coordinate rehearsals, ensure you learn your lines & your blocking (mostly).organize the production team, calls cues, and generally gets things done.
We need someone organized who can coordinate rehearsals and schedule 100 people without too many conflicts. Someone who can put people in the right place at the right time with all the right things. Someone who can understand our Director’s vision and make it happen on stage.

How to Apply
To apply, send an application to by 6PM on May 15th. Your application should include your qualifications, why you’re interested in the position, and what you plan to do if selected. Your application will be circulated to the Committee for review, and then we will schedule you to come in for an interview.

Stage Manager applications are open until May 30th. You’ll be interviewed and a shortlist of candidates will be provided to the Director for their final choice.

AGM 2016 Recap!

We held our Annual General Meeting on Saturday, April 23!

We approved two constitutional changes. First, we’ve increased the Executive to 7 people. If someone hasn’t yet been appointed or a person is wearing two hats, other members of the committee will be appointed to Executive to keep the number at 7.

Second, the Producer role has been split into two, where the Secretary role has been replaced with the Company Coordinator. The Producer handles all things external (cameos, ticket sales, posters, etc.) and the Company Coordinator takes on memorabilia, script printing, and parking passes alongside the traditional Secretary duties. A huge thank you to Tristan Mills and Melinda Mah for trying out the split this year.

Michael L. Davenport joins the Honor Roll! Congratulations!

The theme for FASS 2017 is Superheroes!

A huge congratulations to the following people who were elected at the AGM!
President Elizabeth McFaul
Vice President (President of Party) Gavin Craig
Company Coordinator Katherine Schill
Representative Monica Pierce
Representative Shannon Broekhoven
Representative Minhung Ling
Representative Robert Audas

Applications for Producer, Treasurer, Director, Tech Director, and Stage Manager are all open!
